Haag-Streit UK donates an A Scan Biometer to the Andean Medical Mission
Haag-Streit UK is pleased to announce the donation of an A Scan Biometer to the Andean Medical Mission (AMM) as part of their on-going charity work for 2012. The generous donation was presented to Dave Goldsmith, Chairman of the Andean Medical Mission, in preparation for their trip in May.
Dave commented, “We are delighted to have received the A Scan Biometer from Haag-Streit UK. We rely on the kind donations of equipment from generous companies in order that we can spend every penny that we have on improving the lives of the Bolivian people.”
Dave continued, “Our next mission leaves on the 17th May and the biometer will be in constant use. Cataracts are one of the most common causes of blindness and we can now perform cataract surgery for just nine pounds per eye. Ensuring we get the correct readings will massively increase the operations’ success rates.”
AMM assists with the Global 2020 Vision aim of eliminating avoidable blindness within the Bolivian communities of the Andes and Amazon. Providing free ophthalmic care through outreach clinics, they try to reach remote communities where access to healthcare is difficult and cost is a barrier. Out of a team of nine, four are UK consultant ophthalmologists and they pay their own costs to go on the missions.
Of the 40 million people around the world who suffer from blindness, seventy to eighty percent could have some or all of their sight restored through the correct treatment. During their next mission in May, AMM plan to equip a riverboat hospital on the Amazon. The group of surgeons will treat river infections and perform cataract surgeries as well as other simple procedures free of charge to those who have little chance of ever being able to afford this type of care.
Haag-Streit UK’s Marketing Manager, Sharon Mills, commented, “We were delighted to be able to help the Andean Medical Mission by donating this equipment. Haag-Streit is committed to helping charities wherever possible and we look forward to tracking the progress and success of their work in May.”
